There’s nothing better than a brand new puppy frolicking around your house with paws just too big for them … but there’s also nothing worse than cleaning up accidents inside your home.

Potty training is the first thing new pet parents concern themselves with — and the earlier you start, the better! With a little consistency, some patience, and a whole lotta love, you’ll have a perfectly house-trained pup in no time.

Here’s what you need to know to potty train your new pup:

Schedule Is Key

When it comes to puppy potty training, developing a consistent and reliable schedule for your fur baby is extremely beneficial.

Generally, take your fur baby outside the following times daily:

  • First thing in the morning
  • Last thing before bed
  • After eating or drinking
  • After spending time in the crate
  • After playing inside
  • After waking up from a nap

In the beginning, it’s a lot! You might be taking your fur baby out 10-12 times a day. By giving them more opportunities to successfully go potty outside, you’ll expedite the training process.

Pet parent tip: Your pup can usually hold it for as many hours as they are months old — up to 9-10 months. This means 3 hours for a 3 month old, 6 hours for a 6 month old, etc.

Reward And Praise Often

As mentioned above, positive reinforcement is the best approach when it comes to your beloved four-legged family member. When your fur baby successfully goes to the bathroom outside, let them know how pleased you are! Throw a party! Clap your hands, praise them effusively, and give them a healthy treat.

If you make a big deal of it, they’ll know that it’s important to you. And your sweet pup ultimately just wants to make you happy.

When your pup does have an accident (it’s inevitable!), use an effective urine remover. PawTree’s Urine Eliminator uses enzymatic technology that helps break down urine proteins in carpet and contains a unique bacteria blend that completely neutralizes odors.

Whatever product you choose, it’s important that your product removes urine stains and smells rather than just masking it — this will help keep your pet from repeat marking!

Observe Them Throughout!

As you go through all these potty training steps, keep an eye on your pup. They’re just babies after all!

Look out for behaviors that might indicate a need to go to the bathroom. By watching, you catch them in the act and can use the opportunity to reinforce good behavior.

Additionally, keep an eye on their stools. One of the best ways to set your pup up for potty training success is by feeding them high-quality food and purposefully supplementing. Healthy stools are easier to control; your pup is less likely to have an accident if they’re properly nourished!

In general, look for nutrient-dense, digestible food developed by veterinarians or nutritionists. PawTree’s healthy, vitamin-rich food is good for your fur baby’s stomach, making messy accidents less likely.

If your fur baby has a No. 2 accident, use our Oxy Shot. It effectively cleans up non-urine pet messes (dirt, throw up, and poop) so you can pretend it never happened.

How Long Does It Take To Potty Train A Puppy?

The timeline for puppy potty training varies, depending on many factors including age, previous environment, and nature — as well as your methods and consistency. In general, it can take a few weeks to several months.

Love, patience … and a few other materials. Here’s what we recommend for successful house training:

PawTree’s puppy starter kits are an easy way to get everything you need for potty training and contain all of the items above.

However you source your pet products, be sure to buy highly-digestible food (preferably developed by pet experts), as well as all-natural treats to motivate good behavior. We also recommend a gut supplement and vitamin-rich food seasonings to stabilize your fur baby’s feces.

P.S. Trust us, an effective urine eliminator is non-negotiable during the early weeks of your pup’s homecoming!
